Chapter 12: Cade

Cade stayed kneeling after Lya left, staring at the floor without seeing it. Both blood and passion had gone cold in him, leaving only the gut-wrenching feeling that he’d fucked up. Badly. The day’s sleep had been soaked in half-remembered nightmares of blood, pain, and humiliation, brought on by that hint of a scent that had reminded him of his sire and the bizarre message he’d received. When Lya’d had her quiet adrenaline spike over whatever was in that message, he’d jumped to a conclusion: that she was somehow part of some plot on his life.

It had made sense in the three seconds it had taken the idea to form in his mind. She’d never mentioned what she actually did for work. Half-elves knew better than to risk coming to Raleigh. They knew they were fair game. Most weren’t bold enough to make the arrangement Lya had with Maria, or they weren’t desperate enough.

Lya was. Which of the two he didn’t know, but she was.

And then for her to come to his bed twice in as many nights? Ask for a date the night after he’d caught a scent that should’ve been long dead? Fear had screamed that maybe his sire wasn’t really dead. That Cade had to be a target and Lya the huntress.

Or so he’d thought.

Of course, she could have been lying. It was exactly what a bounty hunter pretending not to be one would do.

But if that was the case, why hadn’t she taken him already? Two nights in a row, he’d passed out in a sated sexual exhaustion the likes of which he hadn’t experienced in at least a century, and she’d been right alongside him, little silver knives and all.

No, it didn’t make sense for her to have missed two easy chances.

He’d caught a little of the voice Lya had been speaking to the other day and it hadn’t been Callista, but a summons from that hag would be enough to give any Othersider a jolt. Lya was only half-Otherside, walking a precarious line on the best of days. She probably practiced martial arts to defend herself from the kind of shit he himself had pulled, a necessary precaution when everyone in the world she walked in was faster, stronger, or more magically gifted than she was.

“Fuck,” he snarled. Then again, louder, because the word just didn’t sum up the magnitude of what he was feeling.

It was only while watching her stalk out the door in a righteously cold fury that he realized he was definitely feeling more than bloodlust or sexual attraction for her. It might only have been a few days since they’d met, but he’d been alone long enough to know when he’d come across someone special.

Lya was a once-in-a-century kind of person, maybe rarer, and he’d let his paranoia and the bloody ghosts of his past scare her off.

Cade dragged himself to his feet, snatched a robe from behind the door, and slipped it on, not bothering to tie it shut.
